Experimenting with various materials, Luk built a past-present wasteland with petroleum-based products as well as landfill-monuments constructed of obsolete devices cast in concrete, and hanging polystyrene orbs and eroded shard of sea glass. Initiated by Luk, there will be a 30-minute recorder performance by Zeit Recorder Quartet, which is a direct description of and an interaction with the installation. Held on the Saturdays and Sundays from 5 November to 18 December, the group will play quartet, trio and duet of 3 to 4 different pieces composed by Erikson Ting, who is one of the members of the Quartet, and renowned Japanese composer Ryohei Hirose at different sections. Live Musical Performance Date and Time: Every Sat and Sun from 5 November – 18 December, 3 – 3:30pm Venue: Gold Ball, 2F, K11 MUSEA, 18 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong About Andrew Luk Andrew Luk (b. 1988, US) is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Hong Kong. He works across disciplines to create artwork that often defies classification, frequently engaging sculpture, dance, video art, installation, relational art, and video games. His material-based body of work investigates how the human civilisation regards itself in relation to nature vis-à-vis history, technology, material, architecture, philosophy, science fiction and more. He has had solo exhibitions at chi K11 Art Museum, Shanghai (2018) and Videotage, Hong Kong (2015). Luk’s work is included in public collections worldwide, including Smart Museum of Art, Chicago; Frank. F. Yang Art and Education Foundation, Shenyang; and University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. About Zeit Recorder Quartet Zeit means “time” in German. Zeit Quartet was founded by Hong Kong recorder players Erikson Ting, Joey Chan, David Tong, and Dora Cheng. Formed in 2018, the quartet immediately won the championship in the 2018 Hsinchu International Recorder Competition. In the next year, the quartet won the silver prize in the 40th Japan Recorder Contest. In 2020, the two elder members of the quartet played a duet and won the champion in “Zen-on Recorder Video Contest 2020” of Japan during COVID. Recorder quartet is a rare genre in Hong Kong, yet Zeit believes that Hong Kong needs and deserves this unique wonderfulness. About the Performance In as early as 2020, Andrew and Erikson begun exchanging ideas and considering the possibility of collaborative work. However, it was not until 2022 that a collaboration came in place. Given the constraints of this variation of Haunted, Salvaged, mechanical rotation and corresponding oscillation of hanging elements, used in past iterations, would not be possible. it was important, therefore, not to merely replace the absent motion, but to, through this collaboration, identify a direction that neither Andrew nor Erikson could have achieved alone - a ‘third voice’ provoked from an amalgamation of both their practices. Initially, through looking at photographs of the installation and recalling it from memory, both artists discussed their individual thoughts, and recordings were sent back and forth to establish a collection of musical pieces to be played. These conversations inspired Erikson to compose a piece titled Dirac Sea specifically for this exhibition. Selected pieces written by Ryohei Hirose were also lined up in the performance as well. There will be a performance schedule on Saturdays and Sundays throughout exhibition duration in K11 MUSEA.
