Composers often found inspiration as they travelled around the world. Chinese American composer Ge Gen-Ru went to New York in his 30s and encountered Christianity, which greatly influenced him and resulted in the composition of his Angel Suite, a work expertly employs a wide range of styles to convey themes of spirituality through music. French composer Maurice Ravel visited the Great Paris Exhibition in 1889 – an eye-opening event for this young man of 14 – at which he was first exposed to oriental musical styles. The unique sound of his String Quartet is a kaleidoscope of impressionist flair, neoclassicism, and his affection for Mozart. The Quartet also has unusual tonal effects, demonstrating his expanded musical vocabulary and hinting at his appreciation for Eastern music. Programme HE Zhanhao & CHEN Gang (arr.
