年逾花甲的哈洛（占博班特 飾）在退休後無所事事，因為兒子的事故，與老婆莫琳（彭尼露威頓 飾）的關係如履薄冰，生活猶如一潭死水。直到某日，哈洛驟然得知失聯多年的老友昆妮身患絕症，本打算只見她一面，卻成就了一段畢生難忘之旅！為了鼓勵好友，他決意孑然一身，放棄任何交通工具，徒步幾百英里親身探望她，盼以信念和堅持去延長她的生命。路途上，哈洛走遍英格蘭風光，體驗到各種人和事、怠倦和辛勞，從傷痕累累中悟出救贖，尋回愛的初心。
