故事大綱：
《獨立時代》是「新臺北三部曲」的首部曲。人見人愛的琪琪被覺得太假、富家女Molly面臨一樁看來不妙的婚約、公務員小明安分守己卻過於單純；再加上滿口歪理的舞台劇導演、懷疑生命目的的小說家，各種荒謬的人際情境彼此糾纏。天亮之後的明天，他們該怎樣真誠地面對自己？楊德昌將編導兩部舞台劇的經驗融入《獨立時代》，以喜劇型態與誇大的表演風格，擺脫過往作品的嚴肅，對道德失序的社會提出批判和省思。
