Reorient The Box and meet the body bearing the imprints of time

Presented as the opening programme of the Freespace Dance 2024, a selection of cutting-edge works exploring concepts of time and space, local veteran dance artist Daniel Yeung revisits his solo dance series Dance / Dan’s Exhibitionist. In collaboration with new media artists from Hong Kong and Taiwan, he presents Freespace Dance-exhibitionist, a new work conceptualised and created for The Box at Freespace, which is known for its boundary-pushing performance experience, at the fifth anniversary of its opening.

Daniel Yeung uses site-specific creations and new media art to showcase the possibilities of the body and movement. Performed in 1999 and 2011, the Dance / Dan’s Exhibitionist series received wide
acclaim for its inventiveness in Hong Kong and overseas. This new work commissioned by WestK taps into the versatility of The Box by unearthing its hidden spaces and new spatial possibilities, exploring what freedom means in this specific time and space. The audience reclines on the floor, viewing the theatre from a new angle and experiencing The Box, watching the performer soar in the air.

Daniel Yeung once again transcends the limits of the body and medium, reimagining The Box to illuminate the sparks of the body dancing with different times and spaces in the theatre. Drawing on the power of new media, Daniel Yeung reveals the changes in the artist’s body over 25 years and the imprints of time.
