WestK Performing Arts Presents: Freespace Dance 2024: FIRST Creation Platform

FIRST is a research and development platform that encourages local independent choreographers to present early works-in-progress and share creative processes, foster discussion through informal showcases of new ideas with audiences and industry peers. In its second edition, we will hold two newly commissioned work-in-progress works and presentations by four groups of independent artists at Freespace's The Room.

Two physical theatre collectives start with "building a bridge" and through an unpredictable football match, they explore the diversity and conflicts arising from language barriers and physical collisions in the realms of humanity, culture and society.

Zelia ZZ Tan – REfract work-in-progress presentation

Dancer Zelia engages and coexists with her virtual avatars, triggering refractions, reflections, responses and reactions in delicate moments of dialogue and choice. Audiences will engage in shared choices, enhancing the relationship between humans and digital interfaces, prompting deeper reflection on empathy and communication, vital in the age of AI.

Launched in 2023, FIRST is an interactive artistic platform designed to encourage local choreographers to share new work-in-progress and practice-in-development ideas.

As a creation research and development platform, FIRST invites dance artists or artist groups to individually present and explore new concepts in any format. At the same time, it offers the audience and industry peers the chance to offer feedback and discuss suggestions that support the future development of these ideas.
