Our Forgotten Oyster Reefs
Oyster reefs — once thriving along Hong Kong’s coastlines – are now nearly lost. These remarkable ecosystems are vital for healthy oceans, thriving fisheries, coastal resilience, and are deeply rooted in local culture. Today, however, oyster reefs are among the most endangered marine habitats in the world and there is an urgent need to restore them. Through illustrated displays, the exhibition "Reviving Hong Kong's Ocean Heritage – Our Forgotten Oyster Reefs" highlights the ecological and cultural importance of oyster reefs and showcases local restoration efforts. It also showcases how local conservation teams use scientific methods to restore oyster reefs and rebuild a healthy marine ecosystem.
The exhibition also features a screening of the documentary “City of Shells”, which delves into the ecological value of oyster reefs and the restoration efforts being undertaken in Hong Kong.
