In the solo exhibition 'being within forms', Lee Sum Yi poses profound questions regarding existence and connection. Cement is treated not merely as a material for urban infrastructure but as a tangible vessel for the artist’s sensibility, exploring the delicate tensions that bind the individual, the collective, and society. Thought inhabits shifting states, flowing between self-reflection and the external relations, contemplating emotional awareness and the practice of relating within this one, fleeting life.

about the artist_

李 心怡 lee sumyi / sami
Born in 1994, currently works and lives in Hong Kong. Lee’s practice focuses on sculpture and conceptual art. Initiated by coincidences that occur between time and one’s days, conception serves as the core of Lee’s creative practice. She ponders the perception from urban life by transforming personal and repetitive daily experiences through material processing. She believed an artwork is merely a representation, all connotation is a manifestation of the will and interpretation.
In 2021, She held the first solo exhibition ‘pacing cement’ supported by HKADC Emerging Artist Grant. She was shortlisted in ‘Tai Kwun Artists’ Studio Programme 2021-22’ the same year and participated as the duo collective IHAVENTSTARTEDEITHER with the residency project ‘20202’. Previous participated exhibition includes ‘Weight Watcher’ (2018, Kunstquartier Bethanien, Berlin), ‘Observe/Scrutinise/Perceive’ (2018, Gallery Exit, Hong Kong), ‘bland blank’ (2019, Experimental Gallery, Hong Kong Art Centre Creators For Tomorrow Scheme), ‘Made in Hong Kong’ (2022, Hong Kong Art Central) and ‘It’s stuffy here’ (2023, wure area, Hong Kong). Lee will continue to cultivate individual and collective projects.
