Intelligence Squared, the premier forum for live debate, presents the motion: "China Produces Better Leaders." The event, featuring some of the world's foremost thinkers on the topic, will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday, 29 October 2012.
With the once-in-a-decade change at the helm in Beijing and with political and economic systems in turmoil elsewhere, the debate urgently explores the issues around global leadership today. China's recent and spectacular rise on the international stage puts forward the view that their methods result in putting in place leaders best equipped to handle contemporary challenges in business and governance, whose success in the long-term contrasts with the short-termism imposed by quarterly earnings and regular populist elections.
For Hong Kong, the motion is more immediate following Legislative Council elections and a new administration. On the 15th year after the territory's return to Chinese sovereignty, hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets, questioning the dynamism of mainland China and its systems as something to be embraced, or something to be feared.
The Hong Kong debate forms part of an unprecedented Intelligence Squared triathlon of three events on China and leadership.
