‘Portraiting on the Steppe’ is an exhibition engages with the Buddhism and the folk stories of the Buryat people - who mainly live on a large steppe between area lies on the border of Mongolia and Russia, where the politi
cal, social and cultural affairs are always peripheral and ambiguous. Through figurative images, Zorikto portrays this adventurous, unique and understated side of another Asia.
By appropriating the styles and features from illustration and fairy tales, the figures in Zorikto’s work are simple, humorous and exaggerated visual satire, often with an intriguing smile which is entertaining yet provocative.
The artist's solo exhibitions have been held in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow, Tibet House in New York, as well as being presented at the V&A Museum before the show at Cork Street London. His work has been collected by José Manuel Durão Barroso, Guy Laliberté, Cirque du Soleil and is being included in other private collections. Recently Zorikto has an increasing reputation across Europe and Asia.
