Once royally called the City of Victoria, after the monarch in whose name this fair island was annexed in 1841, über-modern Hong Kong still retains a surprising amount of physical reminders of 19th century colonial society. Nowhere is this more evident than in the heart of it all – Central. Join our walk on 28 June (Sat) through the fascinating stories of Victorian Hong Kong as Her Majesty checks in before ‘Occupy Central’.
Tour Highlights
- Survey the changes in Hong Kong’s ethnic composition over the years and find out how a very diverse group of people that included plenty of Chinese immigrants, Brits, Portuguese, Eurasians as well Filipinos and Indonesians have shaped Hong Kong’s past and present;
- East vs West: understand the cultural clash between western values and Chinese traditions in Hong Kong’s early days. We’ll especially highlight changes to the status of women over the colonial period;
- Learn some juicy secrets about the colony, its rulers and their subjects (Shhh!).
This tour is not only a good introduction to Hong Kong for the city’s newbies, but it also promises plenty of surprises for those who want to look at the place a bit more differently.
