GAROME 泇弄 is proud to present Echoes of Space, a group exhibition showcasing diverse works of three Hong Kong artists - photographer Laurence Lai, ink artist Lop Yan and painter TTS (the tiny smile), on view from 26 April to 12 May 2024. Coming from different generations and artistic backgrounds, each of these artists presents a selection of works that explore the importance of abstraction and space, inviting the spectator to immerse into the eternal fluidity of artistic languages.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, self-taught landscape and documentary photographer Laurence has embarked on a creative journey for over three decades. His photography explores and documents the landscape's capacity for both drama and serenity. Laurence often photographs with intuition and creates work with a sense of spontaneity.

At the upcoming exhibition, Laurence will be showcasing a series of carefully selected photography works from his recent Paris trip for the first time. With a Leica M4, a Hasselblad 500cm film camera, 40 rolls of ISO 400 black and white film, and a Leica M10P digital camera in his bag, Laurence indulged himself in the art of black and white photography and explored the borderlines of light and shadow in Paris.

As an architect by profession, Lop Yan integrates his professional principles with his love of art, creating his own unique art form that combines architectural discipline and artistic expression.

He interprets Chinese traditional landscape painting, taking nature as the inspiration for their contemporary forms. Lop Yan's artistic mission is to preserve traditional Chinese art and culture, and to express the vivid rhythmic vitality combination of Chinese calligraphy with abstract expression methods. In 2021, Lop Yan was named one of the year’s “Most Outstanding Persons” by Today’s Chinese Journal.

Born in Hong Kong and grew up in London, TTS is an artist exploring the emotional depth and contrasts experienced with the arising and ceasing of feelings – “fictionality and trueness”. Having always experienced anxiety in social situations, painting has become a meditative and ritualistic journey to TTS. In her artworks, she harnesses the power of monochrome and duocolour, scale and repetition which calls for self-analysis and questioning on our own existence.

Inspired by the techniques of ancient Chinese monochrome glazed porcelain and embossed patterns, TTS integrates ancient aesthetics with contemporary motifs on canvases of simple yet profound colours. Using repetitive layering techniques to build up an array of emotionally driven tactile elements, TTS transforms the canvases into contemplative spaces with quiet yet dynamic energy. By repeating the Chinese character 「笑」(Smile) to create an original pattern, or her signature upward-downward smiley motif, TTS vividly brings a modern twist to traditional Chinese artistic techniques, guiding viewers to reflect on the importance and significance of the emotion of happiness in life despite its frequent fluctuations.
